Silk art – paintings, scarves and lovely things….

The artist Sheila Jones is a silk painter who works from her studio, The Mulberry Shed, on the beautiful Polden Hills in Somerset. Her fascination with the patterns and colours all around us – in nature, the landscape and even in lettering – inspire her designs that she translates into paintings, scarves and gifts.

Sheila’s distinctive style is created with a technique that uses steam-set silk dyes, producing vibrant and translucent colours, whilst retaining the original softness of the silk.

It all starts with 100% pure white silk, which is stretched and pinned onto a frame, to provide the canvas for the artwork. Each design is then hand-drawn onto the silk using an ‘outliner’. Once the outline is dry the painting begins – using silk dyes applied with brushes and sponges. The finished silk-art is rolled in protective paper and steamed for several hours in a professional silk-steamer to set the dyes, before being washed and pressed to produce the final piece.
